How to become an awardee?

Typical school life is a friendly place for learning and improving one's skills, but still, it became a competitive environment. The education we receive in the different educational institutions and the attitudes, behavior, norms, and morals that we develop will later guide us in the rest of our life. Our grades will soon become important, especially our grades in college years, because when we get into our first job this will become part of one of the most credible credentials we can be proud of and use. To become a successful student we need to learn certain skills and these skills are all can be learned at school.

So for today’s blog, I will give some tips about the basics of being a good student, which I learned in our class discussions. But before that, I will present first the tips I gathered in an interview in a student that became an awardee during her high school years. This is related to the assigned task that my professor leaves for us. Ms. Awee ( my professor in Understanding the Self subject) asks us to interview an academic awardee and ask her about the secret that she does to achieve her rewards and achievements. The name of the person that I interviewed is Fate Gwyneth Anciro. She was my former high school classmate. So the interview starts when I ask her the question of “ For you how can a student become an academic awardee? And please share with us your secret of becoming a good example of being an awardee. ”

According to Ms. Gwyneth the only key to becoming an academic awardee is perseverance. Studying for her will going to be hard, but the word hard doesn’t mean “impossible”. Studying hard and enduring all the hardships that we will encounter in repetitive creation of projects, assignments, group activities, and repetitive take of different types of examinations are all challenges that students must face with responsibility and accountability. For her, the mindset of competing your own classmates will only result in the sense of competing your own self. We should not fix our minds that we are in a battle and there is always a need to win among our classmates. She advises that helping each other “to learn” is the best thing we can do to improve others as well as ourselves.  To become better in quizzes and other exams, a student for her should challenge himself/herself in taking those. For example, once you fail in a test, it is not yet the end of the world, try to beat that score, aim for high scores and don’t let yourself down. Always keep motivated and think of your dreams. Always keep in mind the things that we want to achieve whenever we are feeling tired and almost burnout. Because her motivation and discipline go hand in hand. There will be times that we might feel laziness. The time we feel like we don’t want to do anything. But she says that “ …fight ourselves in those times we feel those feelings!” For her, we should be STRICT in ourselves especially when we have a lot of pending works in school. Stop procrastinating and prevent cramming. Because for her it is more pleasing and relaxing when we go to school and already finished our assignments and projects because we can no longer add more stress in ourselves and we can definitely focus on the class discussions.  In the last part of our interview, she leaves us a motivational quote. “ There are no failures, only delayed success”.

My interview with Ms. Fate was surely an enlightening interview for students like us. I will add some specific tips that I learned in my class connected to the very good tips and inspirational thoughts that Ms. Fate leave to us.

How to become a better student?
  •        Prioritize your life as a student: doing well in school should be our top priority.
  •      Studying has no substitute
  •       Always attend class. Be physically and mentally present.
  •       Do, do, and do all the assigned homework, group works, and readings.
  •         DEVELOP self – discipline. If there are upcoming tests or if you are going to make any output in school, prevent yourself from using your phone for staying in social media. In short, keep your concentration and focus on your studies!
  •          Manage your time efficiently. Always take opportunity cost first rather than your wants. Always remember that after you finish everything you can soon enjoy your free time with less stress in cramming. And that is the best feeling. “Maging maagap tayo mga kapatid”
