Nowadays, the real world we are
living with is no longer the only home we are attached to. There is already a
virtual world. A virtual world is connected to the technologies we are using
today. This is the 21st century and so this is the reason why we
created our digital self. There is already a generated self, made accordingly for us to understand our
sense of self when we are inside in the digital world. In today’s blog, I would
love to share what I learned in our class discussion about digital self and
social self.
According to William James, “social self is
the recognition that a person gets from his teammates”. With this we can say
that we have many social selves as there are individuals who recognize us and our
fame, good or bad, honor or dishonor are our names for one of our social selves.
Furthermore, we can present ourselves with this:
PERSONA
·
This is how we present ourselves in a particular
situations creating a partial identity
SELF-PRESENTATION
·
This is a process in which we do certain things
in accordance with how others will going to perceive about us
TRUE SELF
·
This is the part of us that is true and fragile.
It is our instinctive core.
FALSE SELF
·
This is the identity that we create in order to
hide and protect our true self
ONLINE IDENTITY
·
This is the identity that we created in the
virtual or digital world wherein shows the sum of all our characteristics and
our interaction
In our class discussion, we tackled how we should appear and interact online. We are future teachers so we
should know how to be ethical online and how can we use the internet in a very
effective way of learning and sharing the learnings that we have. In order for us to have an idea about smart
sharing the reporters of our class share some guided questions that we can use
before we push that post button on the different social media platforms.
Is this post necessary?
In
each post that we are about to share or post on the internet, we should be
aware of our post is necessary to post. I mean, we should have a good purpose
in posting anything. Since our audience is the whole world itself, we should be
more intelligent and smart in posting or showing things off on the internet.
Is there a real benefit in the
post?
In
short, we should not post a non-sense post. We are just becoming a contributory
factor in making rotten knowledge.
Is it appropriate?
Posting
anything that is unethical and immoral is never been appropriate in social
media platforms. Fake news, immoral videos and many more should not be posted.
Let’s no longer add to those who are doing it. Let’s make the change start in
us.
Will this seem funny in 5, 10, 15
years?
Think
before you click. Be responsible for the consequences that you are about to pay
when you post anything that will cause a strain in your image online. Remember
that we have a present digital self in a virtual world that can directly affect
our self-image in both the real and digital worlds.
Have I or we (as a family or as a
part of a bigger group) resolved this issue?
Ranting
online about a certain belief should be applicable in the said issue that we
are butting in. Stop posting stupid and non-sense comments if we actually know
the said issue.
Furthermore, there are rules that we need to follow when we are staying
ourselves online.
- · Stick to safer sites
- · Guard your passwords
- · Limit what you share
- · Anything you post online means forever
- · Do not be mean
- · Always tell if you see a strange behavior
- · Be choosy with online friends
- · Think before we click
In conclusion, our digital selves also have our social self.
It is good to use different social media platforms but please make sure that
every post, comments, and actions that we will be going to do should not be stupid
and nonsense. Let us value our time and freewill in each act that we are about
to do online because the things that we will do online can never be deleted.
